How the 4% Cess Works

After computing tax on your taxable income using the slabs above (and applying the 87A rebate if eligible), a Health & Education Cess of 4% is added on top of that tax amount — this is included automatically in the calculator above.

How is income tax calculated in India?
Income tax is calculated by applying slab-wise rates to your taxable income (gross income minus eligible deductions and the standard deduction), then adding a 4% Health & Education Cess on the tax amount. India currently has two regimes — Old and New — with different slabs and deduction rules.
Which is better, Old or New tax regime?
It depends on how much you claim in deductions. The New Regime has lower rates but few deductions, so it usually suits people with minimal 80C/HRA/home-loan claims. The Old Regime suits people with total deductions above roughly ₹3.5-4 lakh. Use the calculator above to see your exact numbers, or try the dedicated Old vs New Regime Calculator.
Is there a rebate that makes tax zero up to a certain income?
Yes. Under Section 87A, resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh under the New Regime pay zero tax after rebate. Under the Old Regime, the rebate applies up to ₹5 lakh taxable income.
Do senior citizens get a different tax exemption limit?
Under the Old Regime, senior citizens (60-80 years) get a basic exemption of ₹3 lakh and super senior citizens (80+) get ₹5 lakh, compared to ₹2.5 lakh for others. Under the New Regime, the exemption limit is the same for all ages.
